Suminagashi

How would you capture the wind? Immerse yourself in the magic of suminagashi.

Suminagashi, meaning 'floating ink' in Japanese, is a captivating dance between water and pigment. Using delicate brushstrokes and breath control, I guide ink across a water bath, coaxing it into mesmerizing patterns that I then attempt to capture onto the surface of my chosen medium (usually light but strong quality papers from the East).

My suminagashi style is one connected to nature. My favorite way to practice this artform is outside "on location" in a memorable place or time. I try to use the local waters to float my ink and let the ever present winds move the ink into truly one of a kind patterns.

For me, suminagashi is more than an art form; it's a conversation with nature. Each swirl is a fingerprint of the moment, a snapshot of the wind, a place to put memories of a moment...the day. The unpredictability of ink on water mirrors life's journey, reminding me to embrace the flow and find art in every ripple.
